The Ghost Radio
70When the moon rises, the ghost radio plays.
The Ghost Radio
I think I am a haunted person. Strange phenomena seems to follow me around. It started when I was five, and it continues to this day.
My latest haunting is what I call “The Ghost Radio”.
I have a finished basement with a bedroom and bathroom, it is also a storm shelter. At first I thought I would sleep in the basement only when a tornado warning was issued. A local woman was actually sucked out of her house during a nighttime tornado, so I started to get a bit paranoid when the weather turned stormy. Pretty soon I got a big screen TV for the basement bedroom, and then one thing led to another and before I knew it, I was sleeping in the basement every night. I feel very safe down there, kind of like a rabbit in its burrow.
At least twice a week, sometimes more than that, I wake up from a sound sleep, and it sounds just like a radio is playing in the kitchen area upstairs, however I have no radio I can make out songs quite easily, but I cannot make out what the announcer says. Its always a male announcer too, never a female. I guess they would really be classified as a disc jockey, but for some reason, I do not think that is appropriate in this case.
There is jazz music and blues music. Lots of times I hear “Stormy Weather” I would say whatever it is, it does have a good sense of humor, and it knows what is going on. There is big band swing music, country western music, and even disco music…I kid you not. One Halloween “Witchy Woman” played over and over again. Its actually kind of funny! The sound wavers in and out like a bad connection, but I can always identify the song, and sometimes it is just as clear as a real radio.
After a song or two, the weather report comes on, but I can never really hear it. I can just tell by the way they are talking, it’s the weather report. Once in a while, it sounds like a radio talk show, with people calling in, but again, I can never make out what they are saying.
I have no radio in my house other than a clock radio in my bedroom. I live far away from other houses except for my mother’s house, and I doubt that she would be up at 3 am in the morning with the radio on full blast loud enough for me to hear. I’ve investigated that and asked her if she might be playing a radio loud enough for me to hear it at 3 in the morning and she just looked at me like I was nuts. It is not a fan, or irrigation equipment or the sound of traffic on a far off highway. This is deep country, all you hear at night is the crickets, the coyotes and the bullfrogs down by the creek, and of course the wind soughing through the pine trees, which could sound like music, but not an actual song. In winter it is totally silent, except when the wind picks up.
Many times as I wake up to the tunes on the Ghost Radio, Heidi my Yorkie Poo will also be awake, looking upstairs, wondering what that noise is. She knows its something very strange too, because at night she refuses to even go upstairs anymore. She never barks at the Ghost Radio, (although she will bark excessively at any other strange night sound). When Heidi hears the ghost radio, she whines a little and then she will cuddle up next to me and go back to sleep. If I am asleep and she hears it, she will lick my hand very softly until I wake up too. At least, I hope its Heidi licking my hand!
Numerous times, I went up the basement steps to investigate, and once I am half way up, the Ghost Radio turns off. I go back down to the basement, go back to bed and just as I am ready to fall asleep, there is goes again! I am so used to it now that I just fall asleep, and that’s always when it will get louder, of course waking me up once again. I think this aspect creeps me out the most, because it is something obviously intelligent, and it knows exactly what I am doing.
This is the 9th year I have heard the Ghost Radio, it started in the autumn of 2001. At least 5 other people have heard the Ghost Radio while sleeping in my basement. If I did wake up to the Ghost Radio while a guest was sleeping, I would not say anything to them about it, I would wait and let them ask the question., “Do you have a radio playing upstairs”? Needless to say, I do not have many overnight guests anymore. The Ghost Radio has scared everyone away! As soon as dark falls, they are out of here, like rats off a burning ship! Some friends. And it also makes me think that whatever the Ghost Radio is, it wants to scare everyone else away so it can maybe have me all to itself? So it can isolate me? Well, that won’t happen, because I still have my faithful canine friends. In the winter 3 dogs sleep with me, Sadie a German Shorthair, Xena, a feisty brave Jack Russell, and of course, Heidi my baby who is with me constantly. In summer its too warm to have all those dogs around me, so its just Heidi and me. All three dogs have heard and responded to the Ghost Radio. Xena, the Jack Russell, actually went upstairs to confront whatever the Ghost Radio is….and for the first time ever, she actually howled, ran back down the steps and hid under the covers! In fact, she insists upon sleeping under the covers. (Something that does not really thrill me, that’s why she and Sadie are banished to the granary during the summer months).
Our farm sits on a large granite hill. Someone told me the ancients believed granite hills were the best place to summon spirits. Maybe this is part of the problem. Maybe not, but I feel the location has to have something to do with it. As far as I know, no one has heard the Ghost Radio ever before. However, my mother’s house, which it right next door has a very haunted upstairs. I did not believe my brothers about this until one day when I was upstairs cleaning. I moved a bunch of boxes up onto the bed so I could vacuum where the boxes were sitting. I turned my back and plugged the vacuum cleaner in, and when I turned back around all the boxes where right back in their original position! This took less than 5 seconds! There is no way a human being could have moved that fast. Although this was somewhat scary, I did not sense anything evil in that upstairs, however my brothers told me their beds actually vibrated, and they thought levitated while they sleep in those upstairs bedrooms. Could there be a link here to the Ghost Radio? I do not know.
Could there be a logical explanation to everything? I like to keep an open mind. I know of people who could hear a phantom radio because of the fillings in their teeth, however that is not the case with me, I only have two fillings and they are both resin.
And, the only way you can hear the Ghost Radio is if you are in the basement. It cannot be heard from any other part of the house, which makes no sense at all. Whenever I slept upstairs I never heard it. As soon as the sun comes up, the Ghost Radio is gone, but then you think to yourself, “What about tonight?”
One final note. My brother Wilhelm died of cancer in 2008, he was only 35. It was something I never thought I would get over, my beautiful baby brother gone, just like that. Whenever we went places together, people would think we were twins because we looked so much alike. He was the builder of the house I now live in. About 6 months after he was gone, the Ghost Radio started playing Santana’s, “Maria, Maria” one of my brother’s favorite songs and, my middle name is Marie! Coincidence? It was the first time I ever heard that song on the Ghost Radio. Ever since that time, the Ghost Radio has gone on to play that entire Santana album, which was one of my favorites too. I just wonder, could it be my brother getting a message through to me that he survived death?
That’s what I think it may be, and now the Ghost Radio is no longer that scary to me. In fact, I think its actually quite a wonderful phenomena. Is there life after death? Yes, I believe there is I believe we go on, and on and on!
Goodnight, sleep tight!

This is an amazing story! I am always of a mind to look for a logical and mundane explanation first, but if there is no logical answer, I am able to embrace the unexplained. The fact the ghost radio seems so attuned to your own movements certainly seems to preclude fillings or radios from other houses or cars from being the answer.
Like you, I also believe in life after death, and have no trouble believing this could be your brother. I lost my own brother in 2007 and a close friend the year before, and I have seen and heard things that make me think they could be communicating. (I invite you to read some of my own articles on the unexplained if you wish....).
If the Ghost Radio is indeed your brother and/or has never seemed menacing to you, accept the presence as a gift from beyond.
Thanks for sharing your story. If there is a history of unexplained events in your life, I hope to read more.
Mike
There are some great moments here where I was hooked to what you are saying here! This is great! Did you know that some sounds travel better below ground than they do above. Sometimes metal can carry a sound a distance. I lived in an apartment previous to this one I live in now, and I used to hear music when I stood near my kitchen sink. I couldn't figure why. Or how! Then a friend and I tuned across all the radio stations on FM and there it was, the same song. Somehow, it was coming up through the darn piping or plumbing! I wish I knew more about acoustics so I could verify it further. I am not saying that would explain what you have heard. But it sure got my attention! : )
magzz: I always communicate with my brother. Whenever, i think of him and how would he have replied to a certain situation or question, an inner voice gives me the answer in his absolute voice and just in his fashion. Ofcourse, no one else can hear that but who cares so long as I have my communication going with him!!
People who have experienced such happenings will understand while others may just laugh at us!!
By the way magzz, I stop by your hub page several times everyday!!
:)
I loved the progession of your story. It sounds as though it could be expanded into a book. As for the music, I see no logical explaination, so I vote for the spirit world. As long as it's passive you're ok. When I moved into my current house years ago I had the experience of the lights turning on and off at random. And the tv going off or on at night as I was trying to relax. I never did find out why it happened, but it stopped after I lived here a couple of years. There are many things that go on that can't be explained.
Wonderful story and how cool that the radio plays your brother's favorite music. I would say that is a message from him for sure.
I am a believer of the after life and the methods they use to communicate to loved ones they have left behind. The radio playing in my opinion is your brother reaching out to you. I have had a similar experience in an apartment I lived in a few years ago. I would be woken up to music in my bedroom and I did not have a radio. It was comforting music so I accepted it as a sign that this spirit was friendly. Never doubt the hereafter, we will all be there playing our own music to loved ones we left:0) Thanks for the share and accept it as a sign from your bro. Peace and hugs
Hi, loved your hub. I think you are right. If it is like my experience that I wrote about, each event got a little more obvious and eventually turning into a full apparition. I think they just want you to acknowledge their presence. Mine finally quietened down after I talked to her sitting in the dark at 3 in the morning. I really felt like an idiot doing it but it sure worked in my case.
Hope you find out their intentions. If you do please write and let me know.
My mother has a backyard full of older junk and treasures. Well she had an old kitchen clock that got left outside in a monsoon storm one summer. When we found it, you know what it did...
The hands on the clock ran in perfect time seconds, minutes, and hours - but they ran BACKWARDS/ that is not technically possible. The clock design does not allow for that. It did this for just a few days longer than a full year. Then it stopped working and the long hand fell off.
We have no explanation.
( by the way Mag. Just constructive criticism...technically a persona can be possessed, inhabited, emboddied, or out of their body. But I believe technically only non living things and land areas - ie cars, houses or graveyards etc. ) Can be haunted. Unless you are a dead person being possessed by a living spirit, some kinda reverse zombification thing??? Or is there something you want to tell us????
Hmmmm
Keep on Hubbing. Blake4d
Hey where is my first comment here gone? Have you deleted it for some reason?
Very strange but just as this hub goes pleasant in the end!! Surely, you were as attached to your brother as I was!! I shall tell you some of his ways with me sometime!! He was just too sweet!!
The radio appears to have a sense of humour with the song selection :) And I, too, think that all things are possible and those we love can reach us in unusual ways. Your writing style keeps me glued to my computer screen from beginning to end and this particular ending was a very hopeful and loving one.
As for radios, I've had only one experience with them but in my case, the radio was turned off along with the lights in the room the moment we left. Everything would become cold and dark - we'd turn them all back on and leave only to have it repeat.
There are so many mysteries and we just don't have all the answers - keeps things interesting! :)
magnoliazz, me too! Boy do I have a list! Thank you so much for your wonderful compliment on my writing - you made my day! Hugs :)
As per your request after your reading of my Hub...Graveyard of Lost Souls of my considering writing a short story of my love connection to the apparition I encountered on a back road in Fayette Kentucky. I am attaching this link for your review and comment. Enjoy
Magz, you never cease to amaze. Your writing style is clear and evocative, and your narratives are impossible to not read all the way through.
Your Ghost Radio has intrigued me to no end. Despite my appearance as a harmless, petite little flower, who is shy and easily intimidated... Little that is tangible scares me. Reading your story, I got goosebumps. Suddenly, I want to spend a month in your basement, if only to prove that songs do not scare me.
An earthquake in California? That would be like predicting a heatwave in Vegas. Not a very gutsy prediction, even for the supernatural.
Do you have recording equipment that might capture the GR?
Magz, you're only adding to the challenge! I do not fancy myself a "paranormal investigator" by any stretch. I am, however, a thinking, rational, intuitive, insightful human being. We've been figuring out things like this for thousands of years. Sometimes a layman without the burdens of any specific discipline can find solutions where experts fear to tread.
I charge reasonable rates, I'm fearless, and I'm not bad company. Well... steve8miller might argue a few of those points. He seems to hold me in particularly low regard for my comments on his tea party hub. Oh well. ~chuckles deep in His throat~
Wow that was a great story. Loved it
You mean besides "Hubba Hubba"?
I read in one of your posts that you're in your mid 40s. You still let your mom drive your decisions? ;-)~
Wow! Love this sort of true ghost stories... Blogged it on my GhostWritings Blog (with read more link of course)!
I'm still looking for the down side there, Magz.
On a new note... MY bedroom is in the basement, and I seem to be hearing indiscernible news talk or songs in the deepest middle of the night, myself. Cant quite make out the words or the tunes, but something is talking quietly in my ear, just below the fan noise.
By the same token, I live in a house with 3 other men, and somebody might just have entertainment going. At 3:AM.
I think it would be cool if you did a ghost radio journal, like some people keep a dream journal...keep it by the side of your bed, and write down what songs you hear...see if it has any relevance to other things going on in your life...if nothing else, it would be interesting.
Magnoliazz, wouldn't you just flip out if you found out that your clock radio was set on hourly all this time or something?
:)
j/k
Cool hub, headin' back up to the top to read it all over again!
Magz,
I actually did die- shameless plug - I have a 3 part series on my death-
as for your radio- Pending on the foundation and bedrock of your house if your in Wisconsin-not alot of crystaline bedrock out there depending on where you are bedrock could be 100 of feet below ground. Maybe you are the antenae- but your dog getting scared up stairs makes me think you could have a radio loving/music loving spirit since it seems to be older stuff whats the history of the house like? Ialso thought that YOU might be the areial for the spooky radio since you and the location seem to be the key to the spooky music- ... Make a request out loud ask for some specific song or music type you have not heard of on the "radio". Shout out "hey, do you have any...?".
great hubbage
TH
I think you are a half-ghost, half-human and hence you can hear a ghost radio. That or the basement has a peculiar magnetic pressure that enables people's brain to convert radio waves into comprehensible signal.
SO NOW WHEN THE RADIO TALKS JUST VOICES DOES IT SAY ANYTHING TO YOU LIKE "wATCH OUT FOR THE CHAIR"
"aRE YOU HAVING TROUBLE SLEEPING " "tAKE YOUR---- OFF" OR "WHY WOULD YOU WEAR THAT ?"OR ARE YPOU SURE THOSE SHOES MATCH"
"nO WEAR THE RED ONE"...
tHEN AT LEAST YOU COULD TELL IF ITS A GUY OR GITL...spooky
th
Ahhh, it's just a hip gopher Mags. ;) he stashed a little ham-ster radio down under the basement.
Love this story magnoliazz-I want a ghost radio:) I really enjoyed your story and agree that if this spirit is just playing you good music, then accept it as a gift. I hope it is your brother but that doesn't explain who or what before he passed away. There is so much for us to learn on this planet and I love sharing experiences. I also lost my brother 2002 and as a comedian in life, he is a comedian in death. He has played some goodies on all of us. I guess I should hub about it. I do have many hubs about my twin sister and I and our freaky experiences. Anyhoo, i could go on and on regarding this cool subject but I better stop now. Cool story.
No that was ME licking your hand...your werewolf buddy! Just kidding! LoL, that is a wilild story! It really gets you wondering....
Never talk to or encourage a ghost? What kind of advice is THAT?!! Why, it's not racism, it's--it's--GHOSTISM!!
AGHH!!! Call the AGLU (American Ghost Lovers Union)!!
One of a gazillion ghostie stories from the Border Fort:
My wife, Pam, is highly sensitive and can often see and/or converse with those who are no longer lugging around those clumsy, corporeal flesh-jackets. Just one quick ghost story of hers:
We lived in Anaconda, Montana, from 2002-2006. The house had been built in the 1950s by a man and his son, the two first occupants. The father died of natural causes in due course, but the son eventually shot himself (in the house).
Not that the seller told us this (duh), but neighbors later passed the word. The suicide had gone by "Peanut" as a nickname.
Due to Pam's disabilities and ensuing need for space and privacy, we have separate bedrooms. In her room, every now and then, she would see a puff of smoke shoot across the room--we figure, from the muzzle blast when he offed himself, his way of letting Pam know he was there.
She talked to him every time.
This is a VERY well written hub, by the way. Voted Up, Awesome, Beautiful, and Useful. Would have done more, but ran out of buttons. (Hey, it's Useful to anyone who's had similar experiences--which is about 1/3 of the population, according to some studies.)
lets hope they are not lost between worlds wandering aimlessly for decades. your experience reminds me of the movie "white noise" with michael keaton. signals from beyond mixing with the earthly frequencies. science can only explain this world.
My dear edelweiss, have you ever considered that your dearly departed brother, who built your house, may have been listening to a radio while putting in your floor boards, and may have accidently entombed said radio in the floor space just above your basement ceiling or perhaps in a wall or crawlspace somewhere?
Should you ever have occassion to shut off all your electrical power one night, it would be enlightening to see if your mysterious radio can still be heard. Obviously batteries from an entombed radio would have diminished years ago, but this radio could have been linked to an electrical power source from within your own home.
Another consideration is that the reason you do not hear this radio during the day is that it is set on an A.M. radio frequency. During evening hours your A.M. stations get more boost and from the music selection that you mentioned, which I listen to myself, I can tell you they are often found on A.M. radio frequencies.
Then again, perhaps your furry little friends growl, whimper, and dive under the covers because they hate Santana and Carrol King? Just a thought.
Please remember that your precious pups have a keener sense of sound than you do, and I suspect a different taste in music. They may, for instance, like music selections from Three Dog Night, the Beatles, and the Birds, but may detest music selections from the Stray Cats and Glass Tiger.
Now that I think about it, with all the canines you have around, perhaps I should stop wishing you warm kudos and frisky kitten love and go with "puppy love" instead. :0)
Dearest Magnoliazz, I do not believe you are haunted, but you may be demonically oppressed.
As a professed follower of Christ, you know, my love, that your brother cannot be sending you messages from "beyond" and even if The Almighty allowed for such a thing, which is Scripturally impossible, why would your brother choose to communicate through a ghost radio instead of through something far more effective and meaningful?
I mean, if The Almighty allowed for departed souls to leave the spirit world on furlough, which is unheard of, then why wouldn't your brother choose to visit you in person instead of relying upon a radio which has done nothing other than to rob you of sleep and piss off your pups.
If there does not exist a natural explanation to your phantom radio, then perhaps you have left an open door or open channel to the supernatural, which almost always leads to demonic oppression (harassment) of one form or another.
Have you, my love, dabbled in witch craft or in the occult? Have you ever saw a spiritualist, palm reader, attended a s'eance, played with tarrot cards, attended a black mass, a coven meeting, or experimented with ouji boards or drugs?
Have you ever used crystals or honored a heathen god? Do you have any graven images or trinkets in your home? Do you listen to music that is spiritually unclean and offensive? Have you ever had sexual relations with someone who has dabbled in the occult or invited someone into your home, or life, that has done any of these things in the past or does them presently? If you said yes to any of the above, you will need to be cleansed.
By the way, my dove, were you baptized as a baby? If so, your baptism is not Scripturally valid and I would highly recommend that you become baptized through a doctrinally sound, protestant church as soon as possible.
My Grandfather was a Hellfire and Brimstone Lutheran Minister and he insisted on infant baptism just like Roman Catholics do. But, infant baptism is not Biblical and was never practiced by the early church, at least not until the Roman Catholic church hijacked "Christianity" and polluted it with many pagan rites and rituals. Please remember the promise from Our Savior, "Believe and be baptized and you shall be saved."
Please take to heart, my lovely edelweiss, that fear is not of God, nor does he employ any of His agents to frighten people or make them believe there is a life in the spirit realm other than what He, alone, provides.
May The Lord God Almighty and His Son, Christ Yeshua, be with you and grant you peace and protection. Amen.
I came here through google; looking to see if this is happening anywhere else. There is a radio that plays in my house; and it changes rooms.
i have had this happen to me two years ago it has intelligence plays songs i request also nicknamed me baby face talks thru music and is quiet the classical music buff plays music i was never exposed to but now love i only know it started after a storm and at first the walls vibrated but has calmed to a constant tune one after another thier is more but it dosent scare its not in her basement it moves with us sometimes old peolpe hear it and search for it it is odd but i love it too by the way it says it loves me too sound wierd oh well
I too hear a ghost radio. There is no special time or place. I have heard it at my current residence and at the last place I lived. Most recent I have heard it in my bedroom at night before I fall asleep. I have checked my radios and they are not on. ond have gone outside to see if anyone is playing a radio outside but still there is nothing to hear until I go back to bed and I hear it. I can sometimes recognize the music and sometimes I don't I hear a DJ but sometimes it is male and sometimes female.
I Love listening to the radio so it does not bother me other than I cannot find its source. Nice to know I not alone.

I like the chronology of this hub .. The way it starts and the way it finishes. This hub sounded so eerie to start with but had such a sublime end to it!! I wish for a ghost radio myself so that I could hear my baby brother, who you know passed away in March,2009!! I have a lot to do here on earth, more so because my daughter is still to take charge of her life but at the same time, I am waiting for the day when I am again together with my brother!! Could a ghost radio substitute in the meantime!!
magzz, your writing prowess is on the up with every new hub and I am sure that you can become more famous if you get down to writing books on your most favourite subject!! Hey, there is one condition to behold!! You must dedicate the first book to me, afterall I am your best buddy here!! Lol!!
:)
